The Fisherman’s Village – Far-eastern Sea food – Dhaba Style!

August 2007 – Intel South Asia Face to Face – Location Golden Sands Resort, Penang.

Sharleen has a colleague in the Penang office who offered to be our gastronomic tour guide one evening - she drove from one end of the city to the other end where our hotel was JUST so that we left Penang with fantastic gastronomic memories of her home-town/island – bless her!

There is a road around the island which is specked with big and small eateries on both sides. Juliana (the colleague) drove for about 20 mins on this island ring road before we reached this ‘dhabba’ with a board hung from one of the pillars supporting the tin roof saying “The Fisherman’s Village”.

The story behind this eatery was that it actually used to be a village of fishermen, who discovered ‘value addition’ and increased profitability margins as tourists started coming to Penang. They simply added a small restaurant at the gate of the village which serves fantastic tasting fresh seafood in both local and continental dishes.

Juliana chose 1 dish representing all major styles of cooking and we ended up ordering the lobster thermidor, black pepper squid, thai style whole fried fish, and they were all fantastic. We spent about 2 hrs enjoying fresh, fantastically made sea-food being brought to our table, the breezy weather and great conversation.
So good the food was, that I am writing this entry 2 months after I was at the Sea Food Village and the memories of that dinner are still making my mouth water!

Definitely worth a visit if you happen to go to Penang!
